Russell stirred up a lot of emotion with his recent post about how PR people are morons. The comment string on Russell's post addresses all of the issues on my mind. Those I particularly agree with acknowledge Russell's opinion but also condemn his blanket statement about the PR profession. In fact, I most agree with a point made in Russell's follow up post about doing your homework before contacting a blogger - or anyone else for that matter. That's PR 101 and we shouldn't forget the fundamentals just because we are contacting bloggers. Mistakes and poor tactics are more evident in the blogosphere and it's a two way street. I've made and will make mistakes and so will Russell. He makes some interesting points as do those that commented to his post. Take the good and leave the rest. PR folks can choose to not read or contact Russell and I'm sure he'd be just fine with that. Or we can clean things up a bit and try to evolve this form of communication. If I've done my homework and feel that I have a valid reason to contact Russell he may still choose to slam me. And that's ok.
